Kevin Halcrow of Lakeland Wooden Boats has brought a rather different boat with him to this year’s Southampton Boat Show. Alongside one of his Andrew Wolstenholme designed clinker dinghies – a 14’6’’ (4.4m) Swallow – Kevin is exhibiting a Haven 12½ on the Wooden Boatbuilders’ Trade Association stand.
A pretty 16’ (4.9m) gaff rigged dayboat, the design is the late Joel White’s centreboard version of the legendary Herreshoff 12½. Instead of carvel construction, Kevin opted to build in strip plank western red cedar, with epoxy sheathing and a painted finish.
Started in lockdown in 2020, the Haven was completed alongside Kevin’s day-to-day repair and restoration work at his workshop in Cumbria. Head to the WBTA’s stand at the show to see the finished result!
